House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, a Republican from Texas, has demanded that the charges against Steve Nikoui, the Gold Star father who interrupted President Biden’s State of the Union speech, be dropped. Nikoui, whose son was killed in the ISIS-K attack in Afghanistan, shouted "Abbey Gate" during the speech in protest. McCaul stated that Nikoui felt neglected by the administration and the president for not acknowledging the sacrifices made by his son and other service members. Despite warnings, Nikoui proceeded with his protest and was consequently arrested on charges of crowding, obstructing, or incommoding. McCaul criticized the arrest as excessive, given the circumstances of the protest. The Texas Republican's committee has been investigating the Afghanistan withdrawal and related decisions.
