AT&T experienced a widespread outage across the United States on February 22, 2024, affecting cellular service and internet connectivity for many customers. The outage left customers unable to place calls, send texts, or access the internet. While the company did not provide an official reason for the outage, it appears to be related to how cellular services hand off calls from one network to the next, a process known as peering. There is no indication that the outage was the result of a cyberattack or other malicious activity. AT&T has been working to restore service, and as of late morning on the same day, most of its network had been restored. The company has been responding to customer complaints online and encouraging users to use Wi-Fi calling until full service is restored. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is working closely with AT&T to understand the cause of the outage and offer any needed assistance.
