Harry Whittington, an Austin attorney, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 95. He was known for helping the Texas GOP rise to power in the latter half of the last century and for being at the center of a famous hunting incident with then-Vice President Dick Cheney in 2006.

Whittington supported both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush in their political careers, as well as James A. Baker III and John G. Tower. The hunting incident took place on the Armstrong Ranch, where Cheney accidentally shot Whittington with birdshot in the face, neck, and body. Whittington was taken to the hospital and the news was not made public for 14 hours.

Despite being an experienced hunter, Whittington only remembered the smell of burning powder and passing out. The incident made headlines and Whittington was swarmed by reporters. He had some shotgun pellets in his body for the rest of his life.

Whittington grew up in Henderson, Texas as a Democrat but was attracted to the GOP's messages of small government and low taxes. He put himself through college and law school at the University of Texas at Austin and later joined the state Republican circles. He served on various Texas boards and commissions, and was even asked by Governor George W. Bush to chair the Texas Funeral Service Commission.
