Russian pilots flying four separate passenger planes reported a UFO buzzing Volgograd while Vladimir Putin visited the city to attend ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II. The object was seen changing color and height and was reported to aviation authorities. Putin's visit was marked by a speech in which he hinted at the possibility of a nuclear conflict in Ukraine, stating that "a modern war with Russia will be completely different".

The sightings were reported to air traffic control and civil and military authorities but no official comment has been made by the Russian government. The flights involved were from Sochi to Moscow, Istanbul to Moscow, and Mineralnye Vody to St. Petersburg, all taking major detours to avoid the war zone in Ukraine before flying near Volgograd.
