Backstreet Boys band member, Nick Carter, is fighting back against two women who have accused him of sexual assault. Carter has filed a countersuit against one of the accusers, Shannon Ruth, who sued him in December for alleged sexual battery in 2001 when she was 17. The countersuit also names Melissa Schuman, another accuser and her father, Jerome Schuman. Carter claims that their accusations have caused approximately $2,350,000 in damages to him and the Backstreet Boys and that the two women have "thrust themselves into the spotlight" in an attempt to "destroy innocent lives".

The court documents state that Ruth and Schuman are "opportunists" and took advantage of the #MeToo movement. Ruth's attorney has responded, stating that a jury will weigh the evidence and decide. Carter's countersuit alleges that Schuman and her father were eager to team up with Ruth in their scheme and that the two women have caused him and his family to suffer emotional distress from harassment and death threats.
