North Korea has issued a warning against continued military exercises between the United States and South Korea, stating that the situation on the Korean peninsula and in the region has reached an "extreme red line." North Korean Foreign Ministry, through an unnamed spokesperson, threatened to respond to the military drills with "most overwhelming nuclear force" and take the toughest reaction to any military attempt by the U.S. The statement came after Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's three-day trip to South Korea where he announced the U.S. has an "ironclad" commitment to Seoul, which includes "the full range of U.S. defense capabilities, including our conventional, nuclear, and missile defense capabilities."
