Texas Republican Rep. Pat Fallon has made good on his promise to file impeachment articles against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, delivering the articles to the House on Monday. The articles, which were introduced as House Resolution 8, have been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, who will determine whether to proceed with the impeachment process.

Rep. Fallon had vowed to take action against Mayorkas last week, as part of an effort by the new Republican majority in the House to fight the Biden administration on issues related to immigration and the southern border crisis. In a statement to Fox News, Fallon said "Secretary Mayorkas’ policies have undermined law enforcement activities at our southern border" and that "he is unfit to lead the Department of Homeland Security."

The articles of impeachment, as reported by Fox News, make a series of allegations against Mayorkas, including that he has failed to execute the Secure the Fence Act of 2006, that he provided false and misleading testimony to Congress, and that he publicly and falsely slandered border agents who had been cleared of any wrongdoing.

While the text of the articles of impeachment has not been released yet, the articles quote Mayorkas' testimony in April 26 and Nov. 15 Congressional hearings in which he said the border was secure, as well as a 511-page report by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Office of Personal Responsibility that exonerated border patrol agents in Del Rio, Texas of any wrongdoing.

Mayorkas responded to the impeachment articles in a statement, saying "I will be ready for future investigations by House Republicans while continuing to fulfill my daily responsibilities," and that he has "a lot of work to do."
