Montana Republican Senator Steve Daines has written a letter to the Department of Defense (DOD) regarding the sighting of a suspected Chinese spy balloon in his state's airspace. Daines called the high-altitude balloon a "concerning event" and expressed concern about the security of Malmstrom Air Force Base and the US' intercontinental ballistic missile fields.
He has requested a full security briefing from the administration and wants to establish the flight path of the balloon and any national security assets that may have been compromised. The Pentagon has not yet commented on the situation. The US government is confident that the surveillance balloon belongs to the People's Republic of China. The US military has monitored the balloon's movement and did not take any action because of the associated risks.
