CALIFORNIA - A shocking attack took place in Dana Point on Wednesday when a driver, Vanroy Smith, allegedly hit a bicyclist with his car and then proceeded to stab him to death. The victim, Michael Mammone, 58, was an emergency room doctor at Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach. Smith was detained at the scene by witnesses until law enforcement arrived and he has since been booked on suspicion of murder.

There is currently no known connection between the two men and the motive for the attack remains unknown. The Mission Hospital family is grieving the loss of an exceptional physician and friend.
