Republican lawmakers in Maine are proposing measures to increase security in schools by either hiring armed security officers or allowing teachers to be armed. Rep. Steven Foster, R-Dexter, has sponsored a bill that would permit school employees who complete a certification program to carry a gun on school grounds. The proposal follows recent school shootings in Florida and Texas. However, the Maine Gun Safety Coalition has opposed the idea of armed teachers, even with certification and training from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. Republicans are also focusing on education reform, including creating more school choice and transparency in curriculums, and addressing declining test scores.
