ST. LOUIS LAWYERS SUPPORT BLACK LIVES MATTER WISH TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT REGARDING PORTLAND PLACE PROTEST

St. Louis lawyers, Mark McCloskey and Patricia McCloskey wish to set the record straight about the protest on one hand and the actions of a few individuals who chose to exploit the otherwise peaceful protest to place Mr. and Mrs. McCloskey in fear of imminent harm.

"Both Mr. and Mrs. McCloskey are lawyers whose professional careers have punctuated by their long standing commitment to protecting the civil rights of clients victimized at the hands of law enforcement. This commitment of time and resources to this cause continues today in the Isaiah Forman case.

The peaceful protesters were not the subject of scorn or disdain by the McCloskeys. To the contrary, they were expecting and supportive of the message of the protesters. The actions of violence, destruction of property and acts of threatening aggression by a few individuals commingling with the peaceful protesters, gave rise to trepidation and fear of imminent and grave.

Both Mr. and Mrs. McCloskey acted lawfully on their property which sits on a private gated lane in the City of St. Louis. Their actions were borne solely of fear and apprehension, the genesis of which was not race related. In fact, the agitators responsible for the trepidation were white.

"The Black Lives Matters movement is here to stay, it is the right message, and it is about time," said Albert S. Watkins, legal counsel for Mr. and Mrs. McCloskey. "The McCloskeys want to make sure no one thinks less of BLM, its message and the means it is employing to get its message out because of the actions of a few white individuals who tarnished a peaceful protest."

Earlier, the couple said they ‘we’re in fear’ of their lives when trespassers entered their private property.

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Hundreds of protesters chanted and marched to St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson's home Sunday night calling for her resignation.

A group of 300 protesters, chanting "resign Lyda, take the cops with you," marched after Krewson read the names and addresses of demonstrators calling for police reform during a Friday afternoon Facebook Live video.

During the protest, a couple at a nearby home stepped outside with guns. Images and videos showed the woman pointing a handgun at the crowd. A man was seen holding a rifle.

The images and videos were shared thousands of times on social media Sunday night. Some people are supporting them for protecting their property and others are strongly criticizing them.

The homeowner reached out to News 4 Monday morning saying he was having dinner with his family outside of his home when the crowd smashed through wrought iron gates on Portland Place.

"A mob of at least 100 smashed through the historic wrought iron gates of Portland Place, destroying them, rushed towards my home where my family was having dinner outside and put us in fear of our lives," he said. "This is all private property. There are no public sidewalks or public streets. We were told that we would be killed, our home burned and our dog killed. We were all alone facing an angry mob."
